Well-trained operators have a number of attributes. They know what to do when they are tasked with a challenging lift, and they’ve had time on the ground and with other operators. They know the timing of the control movements and have developed muscle memory to make them efficient with their job skills.
Good operators also know their abilities and limits, especially when making a lift for the first time, and they can anticipate and react to events before there is an issue.
For operators in training, simulators are a proven tool that results in faster time to competency and more effective operator assessment.
Located in Fort McMurray, Alberta, Keyano College provides specialized training to more than 2,800 full-time students and over 13,000 part-time students.
At Keyano College, simulators complement the operator training program, allowing students to become more confident in their skills in a low-stress environment. In the classroom, one student will observe the lift, while another operates. A third acts as a rigger and provides the signals. Operators can practice lifting columns, unloading materials onto buildings, or placing loads in trucks and the ground. It helps them build communication skills with the rigger, and it provides them with more insight on the actual functions of the crane and how it works in different environments.
For example, each student can practice the same lift during inclement weather.
