Fleming College Enhances Heavy Equipment Training with Advanced Reporting and Performance Metrics with CM Labs Mobile Simulation Training Center
Executive Summary
Fleming College is a public college of applied arts and technology located in Peterborough, Ontario. It has 6,800 full-time and 10,000 part-time students—including hundreds of international students from countries around the world—attending its campus locations in Peterborough, Lindsay, and Haliburton.
Fleming College offers more than 100 full-time programs in Environmental and Natural Resource Sciences, Fine Arts, General Arts and Science, Technology, Skilled Trades, Community Development, Health, Business, and Justice, as well as other Continuing Education courses.
The school’s Heavy Equipment Operator, Resources Drilling Technician, and Forestry Techniques programs instruct students in the safe use of industrial equipment such as excavators, backhoes, bulldozers, loaders, dump trucks, and harvesters. To update its approach to training and further enhance safety, Fleming College has restructured its curriculum to incorporate the use of a simulation training system from CM Labs. Comprising multiple simulators, equipment training packs, instructor stations, and even a Mobile Training Center, this system enables students to learn foundational skills in a controlled environment under close instructor supervision.
Fleming College uses simulation training to:
- Increase the safety of its programs
- Enrich the student experience with more consistent instruction and seat time
- Drive outreach marketing at community events with a Mobile Training Center
We sat down recently with Marc Patenaude, the Senior Operations Manager at Fleming College, to discuss how simulation training has transformed the student experience. Patenaude oversees the School of Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences in Ontario, along with two federally funded research centers.
