Forklift Training Pack Expands CM Labs’ Instructional Offerings for Port Terminal Operators

Port-focused forklift training program for Vortex simulators provides drivers with the core skills and experience required for safe and efficient cargo management.

CM Labs Simulations today announced that at next week’s TOC Europe 2018 (Stand D40), they will be demonstrating a new port-focused training pack designed to provide forklift drivers-in-training with the opportunity to learn machine and cargo management skills.

The latest training pack for Vortex® Port Equipment Simulators teaches forklift truck driving basics with an assortment of cargo, highlighting areas for trainee improvement. The training pack presents opportunities to practice challenging techniques, moving new drivers from basic skills to complex terminal operations.

“Forklifts are one of the most common machines found on ports and operators need to learn to respect these powerful machines to provide effective cargo movement,” said Lisa Barbieri, VP Marketing, CM Labs. “Training in the realistic environment offered by the Vortex Forklift Training Pack safely exposes operators to the behaviour and limitations of the real machine. Drivers learn what it takes to work in a terminal and experience a wide range of port operations.”

Specific training scenarios include a slalom driving course, maneuvering in confined spaces, handling a variety of fragile loads, and stacking cargo inside containers, on trailers, and on warehouse racks. With forklifts prone to tipping when improperly handled, trainees who use the Forklift Training Pack are taught best practices to the benefit of everyone.

“Damaged goods are costly to terminal operators and negatively impact customer satisfaction. Since forklifts interact directly with cargo, safe delivery is a key component of forklift efficiency,” said Nicolae Sterescu, CM Labs’ Port Solutions Product Manager. “Beyond basic skills introduction, the Forklift Training Pack lets instructors get inventive and test the abilities being developed in student operators.”

Instructors and operators alike benefit from performance reporting tools that track a number of user-customizable metrics for each student. This data can then be used to evaluate whether an operator is ready for terminal operations. As well, instructors can trigger challenging events—including machine faults and pedestrian traffic—to offer an environment that further challenges students and accelerates skills development and worksite awareness.

Barbieri elaborated on the overall implications of integrating Vortex simulators, “Ports and terminals worldwide are seeing major, tangible gains that can be directly attributed to the powerful teaching opportunities provided by Vortex Port Equipment Simulators.”
